What Periodontal Disease Isn't Simply Bad Breath

Periodontal disease is a serious disorder that can harm your teeth and gums. It can cause tooth loss, heart disease, and other health problems, in addition to poor breath. Here's what you need to know.

What Are Periodontal Diseases?

Periodontal diseases are gum infections that erode the support for your natural teeth over time. Plaque is a layer of food waste, germs, and saliva that adheres to the teeth. If plaque is not removed, calculus develops (tartar). When plaque and calculus are not removed, they destroy the gums and the bone supporting your teeth. Gingivitis is a type of mild periodontal disease. Your gums may become swollen, red, and bleed easily. If gingivitis is not treated, periodontitis might develop. Plaque can spread and accumulate beneath the gum line over time. Toxins produced by plaque bacteria harm your gums. Your body reacts by fighting the bacteria as well as the healthy tissue surrounding them. The bone and connective tissue that support your teeth are eventually destroyed.

Health Implications of Periodontal Disease

Gum disease, in addition to generating bad breath, has been connected to a number of other health issues. They include heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other conditions. According to studies, people with periodontal disease are more likely to have heart disease than those without. It is not yet clear, however, bacteria from gum disease are thought to enter the bloodstream and induce artery inflammation. It can ultimately result in a heart attack or stroke. Gum disease has also been linked to diabetes. People with diabetes are more likely to develop periodontal disease, and people with periodontal disease are more likely to develop diabetes. It is not yet clear, but it is thought that the inflammation caused by gum disease may make it harder for the body to control blood sugar levels.
