Jaw Problems And Headaches

Posted on 9/25/2023 by Evan
Jaw Problems And HeadachesMany factors could account for the constant migraines and headaches you are experiencing. Well, be sure to include jaw problems as one of the possibilities.

Temporomandibular joint disorders

The TMJ joint connects the jaw to the skull. This hinge allows the jaw to move from side to side or up and down. Without the effective movement of the TMJ, it may be difficult to talk, eat or even laugh. Due to the complicated nature of the hinge, it is more prone to develop complications once in a while. Oftentimes, the effect of the strain results in recurrent migraines.

Bruxism

Teeth grinding could result in jaw problems. It is the involuntary movement of teeth while sleeping. Clenching the teeth applies pressure to the jawbone and this can sometimes translate to pain. For instance, TMJ muscles run along the cheeks and the jaw. When the muscles tense up due to clenching, they cause pain that spreads to the side and top of the head leading to a headache. Chewing gum for too long is not advisable. If you must chew, it should not be more than 30 minutes a day. Chewing too much could exert pressure on the TMJ muscles causing tension.

Pointers to a jaw-related headache

Headaches as a result of jaw strain are accompanied by other symptoms. You may feel a tightness around the face. Other times it will be a pain in the jaw. Sometimes you may have trouble moving your jaw normally.

At-home remedies for jaw-related headaches

First and foremost, work on reducing stress. Stress facilitates teeth grinding as a way of coping. Secondly, do not chew your food too hard to avoid exerting unnecessary pressure on the TMJ muscles. Thirdly, use ice packs to relieve jaw pain. In the process, the headache will subside with time. Finally, jaw exercises and massages can help relieve muscle tension and relax the jaw.
